NASA - Giant Space Bag will 'Catch' Comet
Polybags is delighted to confirm its partnership with NASA to make a giant space bag out of Polymax (the same super-strong, rip-resistant material we use to make your Polymax bags).
For those following the fascinating project we have included an article from this Sunday's edition of 'Living Space' magazine below - thanks to them for permission to reproduce:
Giant Space Bag to save Earth
NASA have revealed plans to deploy a giant space bag in space to 'catch' Halley's comet. The project is the brainchild of NASA's special projects director, Dr Jan Ingfacht, and is a response to concern in astronomical circles that Halley's comet will smash in to the Earth when it next returns in 2025.
The comet is named after the astronomer Edmund Halley who first predicted its motion using Newtonian laws in 1682. Halley's comet normally only comes close to the Earth once every 76 years and last visited in 1986, but scientists believe a deviation in its orbit caused by the gravitational effects of the major planets, could make the massive ball of ice and rock smack in to the Earth with a bang, as early as 2025.
But not if Dr Ingfacht has his way. The GSB project will blast off in 2024 on a single Arianne launcher carrying 2 lightweight satellites and the folded giant space bag itself. Once in orbit, the satellites will unfurl the giant space bag using special robot arms and legs. The bag which largely resembles a normal carrier bag will be positioned to 'catch' the comet as it hurtles unsuspectingly through space. At a NASA press conference Dr Ingfacht said "The bag will need to be very big and strong". Once captured the comet will be towed back to Earth for the scientific community to analyse and then broken up in to small pieces and sold on the internet.

New House Bag Range
Great development for house protection - the obelisk range
It's innovative in tackling the builders problem of bad weather delays. The bag is a 'giant' cover made from lateral welded strips of hi-strength metallocenes up to 12 metres wide. It is then lowered over the building with a drop crane or grab truck to allow work to take place sheltered from the elements.
It comes in a range of sizes from OB1 suitable for modern 2 bed town houses up to OB4 designed to cover 4 and 5 bedroom buildings. All bags are fitted with zipped sides as standard. Whilst regularly used in wet tropical countries on new builds it's a first for the construction industry in the UK.

Versatile Layflat Tubing
Layflat (Polythene) tubing is extremely versatile and is used in many applications these include making bags, protective covering for components, carpets and piping. It has been used to make a temporary drain during a building construction and in the TV and Movie industry.

Poly Recycle
As part of our strategy to reduce our impact on the environment we recycle all our waste polythene so it can be reused. We use a purpose built polythene recylcing machine more commonly know as a "Munchy". In simple terms it melts our waste polythene and turns it back into pellets which can then be reused.

Royal Run
As a Royal warrant holder Polybags was invited to take part in the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon, director Jonathan Davies took up the challenge of a picturesque run through 3 London parks finishing in Hyde Park.
Jonathan finished in a respectable time of 1hr 33 coming 345 out of a total of 10,000 runners!

Rotten Cucumbers!
1) A cucumber loses moisture quickly and would be unsaleable within 3 days were it not protected by 1.5 grams of polythene.
2) Without polythene, packaging weight could increase by as much as 400%,
3) Food waste in the UK is 2% wheras it is up to 50% in the developing world. This is due, in no small part, to better plastics packaging systems.

Cassandra tells it all
Cassandra is the name of Polybags in house scheduling system which is used to manage our production. This state of the art real time scheduling system links the sales office with the machines in the factory.
With Cassandra the status of the job is updated by the machine operator as the job is running. This means that when you speak to the sales team they can give you up to the minute lead times. We hope it helps you!
Green Doggy Doo
DEFRA state that 900 tonnes of dog waste are produced everyday. Polybags manufacture a range of scented and unscented dog poo bags made from corn starch which degrade in a few weeks to composting standards.
Polybags Case Study: As part of an environmental initiative East Dumbartonshire council are issuing 300,000 unscented Dog Poo bags to dog owners in the county to encourage the careful disposal of their dog waste.
